Joe C. Thannisch, third officer in the Merchant Marine is pictured here. He is shown seated, facing front and smiling. He is dressed in uniforms. He was commissioned January 30 at New London, Connecticut and visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Payton. before reporting to Houston for assignment as a deck officer. He has two brothers in service. Thannisch served 17 months sea duty on merchant ships. He attended Polytechnic High School. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram evening edition, February 12, 1945.
