Wesley Allen Dillard, motor machinist's mate first class, is visiting his mother, Mrs. Oma Dillard, 418 S. Adams. Dillard was on a salvage ship attached to a task force. When his ship was sunk at Guadalcanal on October 25, 1942, he was in the water four hours before he swam ashore. The island was still held by the Japanese, but American forces had set up beachhead installations just the night before. When the second ship was sunk, he was rescued after about two hours in the water. After a 30-day leave which he in spending with his mother, Dillard will report to Norfolk, Virgnia at attend deisel school. He is engaged to a New Zealand girl who is planning to come to the United States. His brother, Private first class Omer Earl Dillard, whom he has not seen in five years, is in the Medical Corps attached to the 15th Air Force on Corsica.
