Description
Lieutenant Colonel James Henry Grammer of Fort Worth, Texas received the Legion of Merit citation. This physician was called to active duty as a lieutenant in April 1941, spent 23 months on New Guinea and have been serving as 5th Air Force surgeon when he was given leave to come home. Major General Ennis Whitehead, commanding officer of the 5th, presented the citation to him just before he left. Deserving of the citation, he was a flight surgeon for a squadron, then a group and finally for the entire task force, moved with advancing operational bases close to the enemy lines. He also carried out a vigorous sanitation program to control the tropical diseases prevalent in the area, supervised evacuation of the sick and wounded and set up first aid stations to care for casualties. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, November 17, 1944.
