Description
Veteran of 90th Division in Last War and Seagoing Son Swap Experiences. John Wallace, Jr., seaman second class, radioman, home after a year of sea duty, has compared experiences with his father, John Wallace Sr., 3579 Townsend Drive, a veteran of the 90th Infantry Division fighting in France in World War I, and this is a far different war they both conclude. Wallace wears the South and Central Pacific campaign ribbon and is a veteran of the campaigns in the Gilberts, Marshals, Admiralties and Marianas. He is a radioman on an aircraft carrier. The battles in the Marianas are the most severe due to increased enemy resistance, Wallace believes. One of his exciting experiences was taking a picture of a Japanese bomber, which was on fire and trailing smoke as the Japanese Pilot attempted to crash onto Wallace's ship. Wallace sailed from San Diego September 8, 1943, and was initiated as a shellback in the equator crossing Novmber 15, 1943. He was studying Engineering drafting at Technical High School when he entered the service 15 months ago. He is a former Star-Telegram carrier salesman. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace have another son on sea duty with the Coast Guard, Raymond Lee Wallace, seaman first class. Photograph of John Wallace Junior, Seaman Second Class, radioman, dressed in his white sailor uniform. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram Morning Edition September 7, 1944.
