    Description

Crewman on Submarine Here Visiting His Parents -- Albert L. Essex, 18, Quartermaster Third Class, has returned from nearly a year's submarine duty in the Pacific. He is spending his 30-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Essex. He is shown standing and wearing uniform, and smiling for the camera. This youthful sailor enlisted in June, 1943, on his 17th birthday, is entitled to wear the submarine combat insignia with one star, which shows he has completed two successful patrols. On his lower right sleeve, he wears the submarine dolphin patch which means he "knows the boat," and can occupy every position in it. He is a former student of Paschal High School, and will report September 18 in San Francisco for another tour of duty. Published in The Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, August 27, 1944.
