    Description

Grove of Pines Thrives On Plot Near Arlington -- Motorists driving south of Arlington have been stopping, rubbing their eyes, and then driving off wonderingly, for there, in the heart of the "West Begins" country where scrub oak is supposed to be king, is a thriving grove of pine trees. The grove numbers 46 trees, loblolly and long-leaf pine, and is now four years old. Dean E. E. Davis of North Texas Agricultural College, who has a well-kept 30-acre farm near by, planted the little grove from fingerlings and in four years many of them have reached more than 15 feet in height. He planted them in a triangle formed by the intersection of the Pantego Road and Davis Drive, which divides as it approaches the Pantego highway to form a "Y." About an eighth of an acre of land is in the plot. He and A. C. Binge, nurseryman and neighbor of Dean Davis, deeded the land to the county but the dean himself maintains the plot. Fingerlings were first brought from Florida and planted, but some died the first year and Dean Davis replaced them with fingerlings from Alto. With the exception of a few occasional pine trees on private estates, the grove is believed to be the only one sporting pines in Tarrant County. The picture showing Dean E. E. Davis of North Texas Agricultural College (NTAC), stands in a grove of loblolly and long-leaf pines near the campus at Arlington, Texas.
