Although he encountered a number of irritating difficulties in keeping flight and personnel records on members of his Navy Patrol squadron, Yeoman Third Class John R. Hancock laughs as he reviews experiences as a clerk under fire.Home on leave visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hancock of 1906 Queen, the 19-year-old veteran of the Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaigns explained that a rusty typewriter was the greatest bottleneck with which he had to contend during his nine months in the South Pacific with Squadron VP-53.'Every time it rained on those islands, my typewriter would rust. Then I'd have to hold up work until the Seabees could make repairs,' he said.Hancock had some flight records to keep on himself, for he served as spare gunner on 20 patrol missions made in a land-based Navy plane.He is a graduate of Polytechnic High School and formerly worked for American Airlines in Fort Worth. A brother, Aviation Cadet James Benjamin Hancock Jr., is stationed at Santa Ana, Cal. He will report to Seattle, Wash., Aug. 25, for reassignment." Published Star-Telegram Morn. Aug.6, 1944.
