"Recommended for Silver StarMEXIA, Aug. 4 (spl).--Staff Sergeant Carl M. Weems, husband of the former Miss Myrtle Blackmon of Mexia, Texas, has been recommended for the Silver Star for his communications work in Italy. Sergeant Weems is a member of the "Black Eye" outfit of the 141st Infantry, is also part of the 36th Division battalion, the first to receive a presidential citation. He recently was home on furlough. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Weems, live at Cameron.The actions that led to his recommendation occurred during the initial phase of an amphibious landing while his outfit was in a defensive position. Unaided he laid and maintained an 18-mile lateral telephone line to another unit on his company's right flank. Four times he went out under enemy observation and fire to make necessary repairs on this communications lifeline.He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received last Dec. 6."Weems is pictured wearing his military uniform.
