    Description

    Machinist mate third class J. R. Tonn, who has two sons in the Navy, has won the Presidential Unit Citation for his participation in the battle of Tarawa. He has been on duty in the Pacific since June 1943. He enlisted on November 10, 1942, after working for an oil company in Big Springs for 12 years. His wife is the former Miss Vinnie Lois Shirley. One of his sons, Delma Durward Tonn, radarman, second class, received the Presidential Unit Citation for his part in the anti-submarine campaign in the Atlantic. Another son, E. S. Tonn, is a pharmacist's mate, second class on duty in the Pacific. Tonn wears his Navy uniform in the portrait photograph. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, July 21, 1944.
