The age-old story of "boy and his dog" took a new turn when Gene Bowers, 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Bowers, learned the wartime transportation difficulties affect boys and their pets. The Bowers, who have just moved from Mineola, sent Gene to East Texas to bring home his big German Shepherd, Ollie. When the pair arrived in Fort Worth at 11 p.m. Saturday, Gene had forgotten the number of the newly installed family telephone and started looking in vain for someone to take them both home. At that hour of the night no transport vans and trucks were available; cab drivers shook disinterested heads at the prospect of giving a ride to them. So Gene solved the problem in the simplest manner he knew: he and the dog started out to walk the 31 blocks home. Half way there, Ollie was worn out, so Gene picked up the 85-pound dog and carried her the rest of the way. When they arrived at 2:30 a.m., his frantic parents were on th verge of calling the police to look for them. It's taken two days for the pair to rest up after the long trek. Ollie's not very young any more," explains Gene. "And I still can't figure out which of us that hike was harder on." Published in The Fort Worth Star-Telegram Morning Edition July 11, 1944.
