First Lieutenant Walter C. A. Beneke Junior of Orange, nephew of Mr. F. S. Beneke and Mrs. J. M. Boyd, has returned to the States after serving more than a year as an A-24 fighter pilot with the 531st Dive Bombardment Squadron in the Southwest Pacific. For wounds received on his last mission when he had to return to his base in a flaming plane, Lieutenant Beneke has been awarded the Purple Heart. He also wears the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with two cluster. Last April in Honolulu he married Miss Eleanor Schnitzer of New Jersey who is with him at Miami Beach where he is convalescing. Beneke has been in service three years. In this picture is a portrait of him wearing his military uniform. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram evening edition, June 9, 1944.
