Description

Mrs. D. M. Doyle is a missionary. She cleared the bottles and cobwebs out of an abandoned saloon to establish the interdenominational Doyle Bible Mission, after she found not a single church in the area West Seventh to White Settlement, and from Trinity River to the railroad. Helping Mrs. Doyle in the venture were workers from the Doyle Bible Class of Arlington Heights Methodist Church, which she has taught for about 20 years. There was a vacant lot, across the street from the only lights and water in the community, was given to them and a church erected on the site. The first services in the new building were held on Pearl Harbor Day. The church was paid for Easter, 1943. By an agreement with the tax office, the lots will be held until the church can raise the money. By Christmas, $600 had been collected for a boys' building, soon to be erected. Kiwanis Club has adopted the boys and girls of the Doyle Bible Mission, and are furnishing two trained welfare workers from YWCA and YMCA. The boys have been selling war stamps, and now have a project to lay walks around the church, while the girls' project is the planting of flowers. For the first time, these children from one of the city's high juvenile delinquency areas have the opportunity to enjoy Christmas parties, Easter Egg hunts, picnics and a weekly club of their own. In this picture, Mrs. D. M. Doyle and children she has helped, left to right, Billy Wayne Worton, in dirty overalls and shirt, with messy hair and dirty face and hands, Tommy Worton, in an over sized striped shirt and pants, and Maxie Sanders with dirty overalls and shirt with dirt on his face is dressed in a three button, belted, dress with a flower pin attached to the v-neckline, round earrings and round eye glasses. They are all, except Tommy who is standing, sitting on a front porch, of a wooden house, in front of a double door. Published in Fort Worth Star-Telegram, morning edition, May 7, 1944.
