Description
Major M. F. Carruthers, a Nebraskan, trained in Texas, before the war at Randolph and Kelly Fields, and where he later was an instructor. He was promoted to major and received the Silver Star at 27 years old, seeing eight months in action in the North African theater and 50 mission as pilot of the storied craft, the "Eager Beaver". The Silver Star citation praised his "clear thinking" and "excellent judgement" for saving the lives of two crews, when he led four bombers to "cover" the two bombers that had dropped out of formation and were being pounced on by the German fighter planes. However, the highlight of his career is when Major General Jimmy Doolittle at the Flying Training Command headquarters decided one day to join the raid Carruthers was leading. Carruthers is photographed in his uniform from the waist up. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram evening edition, February 1, 1944.
