Private First Class (Pfc.) Ray Pierce died in a hospital in Italy December 28, 1943, of wounds suffered in the battle of Salerno, the Allied invasion of Italy. Mrs. Helen Pierce received two shocking news on the same day about her husband's death and her brother, Private First Class (Pfc.) Ernest Flipp, was declared missing in action. Private (Pfc.) Flipp also fought in the Battle of Salerno. Private (Pfc.) Pierce is shown in his official military photograph, a copy of his framed portrait photograph. He is dressed in a military uniform. He is a Purple Heart recipient. He was mobilized with the National Guard at Breckenridge, and trained at Camp Bowie, Camp Blanding and Camp Edwards before going overseas in April. Private (Pfc.) Pierce leaves behind his wife and an infant daughter, Nancy Marie, whom he never met. He was married on November 29, 1942, to the former Miss Helen Flipp. Their daughter was born on November 15, 1943. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, January 22, 1944.
