Clipping:"Johnny McCurry Wanted Action—and He Got It!Seaman First Class Johnny McCurry, machine gunner aboard a Coast Guard combat cutter, is home on leave after nine months sea duty in which he participated in the invasion of North Africa and Sicily.He maintains, however, that his first voyage out in which his ship was with an Allied convoy bound for an Allied overseas port was the most exciting of his sea-going career.McCurry's ship and crew members have been given credit for destruction of one of the largest type Nazi submarines in the North Atlantic last May.The submarine net encircled the convoy but the ships swept through the net and returned their fire, McCurry disclosed. They picked up 27 German survivors and dropped them off at an Allied port.McCurry was inducted into the Army with the National Guard Nov. 25, 1940 and trained at Camp Bowie before transferring to the Navy in September, 1942. He took his naval training at Algiers, La.Seeking more excitement through his transfer to the Navy, McCurry's campaign bars indicate he hasn't been disappointed in adventure and thrills. He wears the American defense bar, and bars for victory over the enemy, expert rifle and pistol shot, naval expedition bar, two actual combats in submarine warfare in the American theater, and three engagements in the European theater. He believes the fighting in Mediterranean theater is the hardest yet experienced in the war.McCurry is visiting his mother, Mrs. Edna McCurry, 604 Porter.Sgt. James Latham, McCurry's cousin, is home on furlough from Ellensburg, Wash., visiting with his wife and parents, all of 924 East Annie. He enlisted in the Army Dec. 16, 1941.
