Description
Sergeant and Mrs. Heihachiro Izumi. A young couple standing in front of a large Air-WAC (Army Air Force) recruiting poster featuring an American flag behind a Euro-American woman in military uniform. The couple are Americans of Japanese descent. She is wearing a solid color 3/4 sleeve shirtwaist dress with a double buckled belt, he is wearing an Army Air Force dark uniform with a light shirt and somewhat darker solid tie. He has military insignia on his collar, a patch indicating his unit, and a military ribbon on his chest. He is wearing eyeglasses, she is wearing a wrist watch. Information about her full name comes from "Serving Our Country: Japanese American Women in the Military During World War II" by Brenda L. Moore with a photo from the same day, citation RG 208, Box 106, National Archives. Clipping reads: "They'll Both Be in Service. It was Sgt. and Mrs. [Tamako Irene] Heihachiro Izumi when this picture was made in the local WAC recruiting office Saturday, but it'll soon be Sergeant and Private Izumi. Here Izumi congratulates his wife on passing the WAC aptitude test. Both are American-born Japanese, or Nisei; she will be the first Japanese Air-WAC." Stamped: Star-Telegram Morn. Nov. 7, 1943.
