Description
Miss Irene Lang, physio-therapist at Harris Memorial Methodist Hospital, helps Sharon Anne Young, 4, exercise her leg as part of polio therapy. Mrs. W. M. Young looks on. A table covered with padding and a sheet fills the room where two women lean over toward the child lying on the table. Lang is manipulating Sharon's leg. The child is wearing a simple cloth around her waist for modesty, and has a bow in her hair. Mrs. Young is wearing a long sleeved garment with dark contrasting collar and lapels. Lang is wearing a long-sleeved long light-colored medical jacket or gown. Barely visible in the background through a doorway are three men who are looking in on the activity in the room. In July 1943 the book "The Kenny concept of infantile paralysis and its treatment" was published in the United States. The polio epidemic peaked in 1952. Chances are very good that this physio-therapist is practicing techniques that were first promoted by Sister Elizabeth Kenny of Australia, who pioneered this treatment and named the field of work. Clipping: "Exercise practiced by Miss Irene Lang, physio-therapist at Harris Memorial Methodist Hospital, helps Sharon Anne Young, 4, exercise a leg shortened by infantile paralysis (polio) on out-patient day at the hospital. Mrs. W. M. Young, the patient's mother, picks up pointers for home treatment.--Star-Telegram Photo." Stamped: Star-Telegram Eve. Sep. 15, 1943
