Description

Competing in a high school football game Saturday afternoon in Amarillo, Texas are the Amarillo Sandies and the Lubbock Westerners. In the third quarter of a close game, Lubbock had the ball at midfield. Irwin Wall, the large center for the Sandies is shown intercepting a Westerner pass. Before he could run with the ball, Robert Brewer, Lubbock, lowered his shoulder and made the tackle. Both defenses put on a show, but Amarillo went on to win 3-0. The viewing stands are full of audience members, the power poles stand in front of them. Almost every player on both teams appears in this photo, though the scrimmage at center involves just two or three. The referee is wearing white shirt and pants with a dark "Y" shape on the shirt. The players are all in uniforms with padded shoulders, knees, and football boots and leather helmets. "(Star-Telegram Photo by Frank Reeves)." Published Star-Telegram Morn. Oct. 28, 1941.
