Description

Competing in a high school football game Saturday afternoon in Amarillo, Texas are the Amarillo Sandies and the Lubbock Westerners. In the second quarter Westerners halfback, Milner Thorne (16), is shown carrying the football. He is breaking through the Sandie line for three-yards and a first down. Wrapping an arm around Thorne's waist in a tackle is Sandie Captain Burrell Collins. Both defenses put on a show and Amarillo went on to win 3-0. Players and referees are on the field as a scrimmage is underway. The viewing stands in the background are full of audience bystanders. Tall light poles stand just in front of the viewing stands. The referee in back on the left is running and has a whistle in his mouth. The players' uniforms are not particularly soiled yet early in the game. They all wear padded jerseys, knee pads in their pants, socks and boots. The Lubbock team has long pants, the Amarillo team has below-the-knee trousers. "(Star-Telegram photos by Frank Reeves.)
