Margaret B. Carter Papers

 
Margaret Banks Carter (1909-1988) was a political strategist for the Democratic Party in Tarrant County, Texas for over thirty-five years. She served on the Texas Democratic Party State Executive Committee and was also an active volunteer in several women’s groups and civic organizations in Fort Worth. Materials in this collection relate to various political organizations and activities in the county and state.

    A letter written by G. W. Williams, chair of the "Fort Worth Council for a Permanent Fair Employment Practice Commission" of 411 1/2 E. 9th St., Fort Worth, Texas. The commission aims to "end discrimination in the employment of Negroes, Latin Americans, Jewish people and other minority groups." The letter mentions meetings at Mt. Olive Baptist Church and the Y. W. C. A.

Odom on Fort Worth businesses that considered themselves as desegregated and would allow "all people regardless of race...to use their services" during the Jim Crow era. The list includes theatres, drive-ins, drug store lunch counters, five and ten cent stores, department stores, and hotels.

    Southeast Side Civic League Headquarters

    Southeast Side Civic League headquarters building, at 2301 Evans Avenue in Fort Worth, with a sign above the doors reading "Civic League Headquarters;" undated [ca. 1956-1959]. A separate sign to the left reads "United We Stand to Keep Morningside White, Sponsored by Southeast Side Civic League." The building was formerly owned by the Calgary Assembly of God church. The Southeast Side Civic League, organized in 1947, was designed to serve the area south of Lancaster and east of Evans Avenue. The League's objective was to "promote civic pride within the area, and to seek street improvements, better sewerage, more lights and bus service and segregation of white and Negro residential districts."
