Description
Arlington State College during A&M controversy; student crowd protests with signs gathered outside of the E. H. Hereford Student Center. A crowd of an estimated 2,500 Arlington State College (now The University of Texas at Arlington/UTA) students gathered at the "Save Our School" rally to protest a proposed name change at the school. The proposed name change was made by four members of the A&M board of directors in December 1964, and the group proposed to name the school "Texas A&M University at Arlington." During the rally, Johnson said a petition that will be sent to the Legislature, which asks for complete independence from the A&M system, had been signed by more than 1,500 students.
