The Arlington Journal was established July 30, 1897, and was the first newspaper published in Arlington, Texas. The Arlington Citizen was established October 4, 1934. In 1957, these two publications merged to create the Arlington Citizen-Journal, which became the largest paid newspaper in Arlington. The Arlington Citizen-Journal was later purchased by the publishers of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram but continued to publish a weekly edition under its existing name. The collection is comprised of photographs from 1865-1991 and contains prints and negatives of buildings, events, landmarks, people, schools and street scenes in the Arlington area. The most notable photographs include images of Arlington Downs; Arlington State College/University of Texas at Arlington, including the 1957 Junior Rose Bowl game; General Motors plant; Mineral Well; schools; and local businesses.
