Abstract

Structural system is the essence of a building on which all other systems are built and integrated together, including architectural, mechanical, and electrical systems. The selection of the structural system requires a comprehensive understanding of the building’s load-carrying capacity and its flow, constructability, cost, and time required. Reinforced concrete is one of the two most prevalent constructions utilized in the United States, along with steel buildings. The advantage of using concrete instead of steel includes its better load-carrying capacity, fire resistance, and insulation properties, but disadvantages are also present. It is crucial to perform structural analysis on both systems in order to select the most appropriate system for the project at hand. Critical member load calculations and computer modeling of the structural frame are performed before analysis, then systems will be compared, and the best fit will be selected to continue to the construction stage. Alternative analysis is one of the most successful ways for determining the best structural systems. The team or individual who have the capability to analyze both steel and reinforced concrete systems will be better prepared for future projects and become a more competent architectural and structural engineer.
