Abstract
Design work from the 2005 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Theatre 4. Paul Baca. Reviewers: Douglas Aldridge and Mario Segovia. The project adds an arena-type theatre for 250 spectators to the Edgemar complex of shops, restaurants, and theatre in Santa Monica, designed by Frank Gehry. It continues the infilling fabric of forms and spaces-in-between at a comfortable human scale. Entry is through a new courtyard, and proceeds to a lobby space encountered by entering under the seating. The procession continues by walking across the stage and up to the seats, atop a series of flowing and undulating planes. From the courtyard, the red color of the theatre can be seen illuminated through the layers of perforated metal and LCD glass, inviting interest and curiosity of a thing within a thing.
