Abstract
Design work from the 2006 spring semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Folding into Civic Center. Matthew West. The extension to the Santa Monica City Hall creates a close interface with the existing city hall, folding under the existing roadway and rising up the other side, where it folds and twists to become a partially covered seating area for outdoor concerts. The part of the extension facing city hall supports a large electronic billboard announcing civic activities and events, and provides an outlet for the creative arts. The city hall extension is a civic sculpture which rises and drops, turns and twists, to engage both pedestrian and motorists driving through it.
