Abstract
Design work from the 2007 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Design High School. Sean Farrel. Reviewers: Douglas Aldridge and Diogo Burnay. The Design High School is a charter school near downtown Los Angeles, where teaching students creative problem-solving skills is the aim. This concept embraces the sloping site by providing for an entry at the top level, and using the roof as a play area or green oasis for the students. The sky descends into two lower levels through a roof-top courtyard. The levels ascend and descend into multi-levels, with stairs that form gathering places and lecture areas. Sliding and pivoting walls between class pods provide for flexible, interactive spaces. Rooftop forms, which include an entry canopy, equipment screen and a solar panel, reach skyward and serve as LED billboards to promote student accomplishments, activities and events.
