Description
The sign reads "Justice of the Peace. Law West of the Pecos." Roy Bean (c1825-1903) was a saloon keeper and Justice of the Peace in Val Verde County, Texas. He was appointed to his position after strong recommendations from the Texas Rangers, and took to calling himself "The Law West of the Pecos." He opened the Jersey Lilly Saloon in 1882 in honor of singer and actress Lillie Langtry. According to legend, Bean held court in his Saloon, but usually issued fines, since there was no jail in town.
