Description
Charlotte Burton, a freshman pre-law student studying at The University of Texas at Arlington, after being named Miss Black UTA. She is seen pictured in front of the fountain outside of UTA's Central Library. In its fifth year, the pageant was held at the end of Black History Week and included talent presentations, gospel singing, and fashion modeling. The pageant was sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and judges included Reby Cary, UTA associate dean of student life; John White, students' attorney; James Hawkins, equal opportunity officer; Mae Watts of KDFW (Channel 4) television news; and Deralyn Davis, regional director of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. Burton won a $150 scholarship and will ride in the annual homecoming parade as an official UTA hostess. Her name will be placed on a plaque in the UTA Minority Cultural Center. The first Miss Black UTA pageant was held in 1973.
