Dr. William Thomas (1882-1953) was a North Texas physician who worked as both a physician and later superintendent of Terrell State Hospital, originally known as North Texas Asylum for the Insane, as well as Rusk State Hospital and Mexia State School. During World War I, he worked with soldiers suffering from shell shock and other nervous disorders. After the war he became a Supervisor of District 14 for the Veterans Bureau where he was assigned to evaluate WW I veterans in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. His wife, Carrie Samford Thomas (1886-1960), was a housewife and mother who assisted her husband with the family ranch in Matador, Texas, while raising their children. Materials include photographs of Terrell State Hospital, both inside and out, as well as Rusk State Hospital and Mexia State School. They also contain several photo albums from the early twentieth century that illustrate ranch life in North Texas during that era.
