Description

Carswell Air Force Base Commander Colonel Julian B. Hall Jr. told the media after Dick Cheney's announcement: "The base is not locking up the door tonight." Defense Secretary Dick Cheney recommended the closing of Carswell but a final decision on the base's fate is not expected until late summer. The shutdown of Carswell and other Texas bases would be a part of a plan, the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission of 1991, to close 31 major domestic military bases and 12 minor installations as well as the realignment of 28 others.
