Description

The Tarrant County Black Historical and Genealogical Society and the Fort Worth Association of the Federated Women's Clubs held a gala opening reception for the traveling exhibition "They Showed the Way," organized by the Museum of African American Life & Culture, featuring 125 Black Texas women who are leaders in various fields. Opal Lee is pictured here in attendance of the event. The clipping reads "Of the 125 women honored in the exhibition, four -- Kathryn Edwards, Lucille B. Smith, Maudrie Walton, and Lenora Rolla -- are from Fort Worth. Eleven others -- Arquilla Gardner, Francine Morrison, Judge Maryellen Hicks, Jimi Burns, Bertha Collins, Viola Pitts, Bessie Munson Williams, Irreasa Drake, Gladiola Swancy, Mary F. Blanche, and Vada P. Felder -- are being recognized for Tarrant County community, business, or educational leadership... Fort Worth school board member Maudrie Walton and historian Lenora Rolla, both in elegant evening gowns, exchanged mock curtsies and mutual congratulations. Mary F. Blanche recalled her 32-year career as a teacher at I.M. Terrell High School, while Francine R. Morrison claimed surprise at her selection as an honoree." Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, August 26, 1987.
