Description
Halted on its way up, this 80-ton smokestack at the Texas Electric Service Company's Handley plant, was blocked up and left in this 10-degree position until wind which had it swaying in the air calmed down. The stack towered 150 feet when erected on its concrete base. Two tiny 2 1/2-horsepower motors were the only power units used to hoist the stack, pulleys and intricate stringing of cables reducing the load. The stack, 14 feet in diameter, was one of the largest any contractor had attempted to erect in this part of the country. The contractor was F. B. McIntire Construction Company of Fort Worth. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, January 22, 1950.
