A Navy Corsair fighter plane crashed and exploded near Russell Field on Highway 81, after narrowly missing its parachuting naval reserve pilot, who had bailed out a few seconds earlier. Lieutenant W. E. Ponder, 30, of 4401 Wilson Lane, landed without serious injury on the Everman airport site after the single-engine craft from Grand Prairie Naval Air Station hit about 50 yards west of the highway opposite Russell Field.
