Description
America's deadliest aircraft, the B-58 Hustler, screams down the runway and lifts its nose skyward for a test flight while carrying its disposable pod. Pilot A. S. (Doc) Witchell, Flight Test Engineer C. T. Jones, and Flight Engineer Grover C. Tate Jr., are aboard. The Air Force plans to order $700,000,000 worth of Fort Worth-built Hustlers which officials say can be modified and kept up to date as the Strategic Air Command's major weapon for seven of eight years. This photo was snapped an instant before the Convair beauty became airborne and while traveling at a speed estimated at nearly 200 mph. A 35mm sequence camera set at 1/250th and f.9 was used. The plane covered nearly 1,500 feet as 16 frames were exposed in 4 seconds.
