Lions Eat Chicken and Honor Editor Longtime Lions Club members had their get-together Tuesday at the 26th annual Tom Gillis Chicken Dinner at Hotel Texas. The menu was the same as it was the first year Tom S. Gillis, Fort Worth insurance man and past Lions district govenor, played host to the group. The 66 guests ate their fill of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and cream gravy, lima beans, corn fritters and syrup, candied sweet potatoes, chef's salad with hard boiled eggs hot biscuits and rolls and pumpkin pie. Honored at the luncheon this year was Walter R. Humphrey, editor of the Fort Worth Press and past Lions district govenor. Humphrey was praised for his community service as a newspaper editor, active Lion, churchman and citizen. Speakers were Ralph McCann, Cecil Morgan, Reverand Robert F. Jones, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, where Humphrey is ruling elder, and Julien C. Hyer of Dallas, past Lions international president. Humphrey was given a certificate of merit signed by those in attendance, and Mrs. Humphrey was presented. Gillis was master of ceremonies, J. J. Patterson led singing with laurence Mansfield at the piano. Johnnie Johnson gave the invocation and Morris Rector again welcomed the group, including a number of out-of-town guests. Those from other cities included George R. Jordan of Dallas, past Lions international president; Fred Grimes of Hillsboro, Sam Braswell of Stephenville, C. P. Dodson of Decatur and R. A. Self of Dallas, past international directors. Other special guests included County Judge Marvin Simpson Jr. Lions district governor; officers of the Downtown Lions Club, headed by Loyd Turner, president, and nearly two-score past presidents. The group stood in silent tribute to the late N. E. Buster, a past president.
