Description
The gaily decorated Christmas tree stood in one corner of the fashionably furnished room. A group of people sat around the room, laughing, talking, sipping coffee and eating Christmas cake. All the outward signs of the holiday season were present yet somehow there was a sense of foreboding that overshadowed even Christmas. Perhaps it was the loaded revolver that dangled in the shoulder holster of each man. Or the knife clipped to the dull gray flying suits. Or the drabness of the portion of Carswell Air Force Base that could be seen through the windows of the alert room, where the men who would man the Strategic Air Command bombers waited, even on Christmas Eve. Or most of all absence of laughing children, of loved ones, of a big turkey on the table. Image of Major Robert A. Williams, who is not at home this Christmas.
