Art Courses Show Need by Results "With all the emphasis on science and rockets, our art programs are not getting much attention these days," says Amon Carter Riverside High School Art Teacher Ed Curry. That doesn't mean that students aren't still interested in art, he says, but the pendulum is rapidly swinging to more scientific and commercial subjects. "Those courses are real good, and if I were a student not planning to go to college, I'd probably be taking a course that would get me a job after I finished school," Curry said. He thinks, however, that there is a definite need for art programs at the high school level. "Not only our art, but our music and drama activities have suffered," he said. One of the basic aims of high school training, Curry believes, is developing the well-rounded individual. He says he tries to kindle creativiy and imagination in his 60-student art class. "We give them a basic course in the fundamentals of art work and art appreciation, and try to discover their most promising aptitude," he said. Curry is also sponsor of the yearbook and the students who work on the yearbook get some credit for commerical art work. His advanced students work on special projects. Recently the group prepared an exhibit for the Texas State Teacher's Association meeting here which had "The Five Senses" as its theme.
