Description

Barbers Clip Hair of 200 Orphans About 300 boys from children homes got their hair cut free Sunday at the Texas Barbers College by Fort Worth and Tarrant County barbers in styles including burrs, crew cuts and flat tops. The occasion was the 28th Christmas hair-cutting bee for orphans from the Lena Pope, All Church and Tarrant County Homes, sponsored by the Master Barbers' Association. The youths received hair tonic as Christmas presents from two barber supply companies and peppermint-stick candy from the barbers. One customer, a 3-year-old from All Church Home, asked for a "bald-headed haircut." The barber interpreted his request and have him a "burr." David Hamlett, 13, of the Lena Pope Home traded his ducktails for a crew cut styled by E. M. Gantt, national field representative for the MBA. David's decision was approved by Bill Pope, superintendent, who said that while the Home allowed the older boys to choose their own hair styles, the administration did not particularly like for the youths to wear ducktails. Children at the home range in age from 2 to 17 years. Barbers Ray V. Pillers of 2913 Gardenia and Foy Babb of 1505 N. W. 25th gave brothers Michael David Stewart, 5, regular little boy's hair cuts combed neatly to one side. Gerald showed the most enthusiasm for his candy and the feather duster that freed loose hair from his neck and collar. The barbers from throughout the county worked in shifts at 30 chairs during the mass hair cutting.
