Description

A five-car exhibit by the Fort Worth Sports Car Club is one of the top attractions at the Yuletide Auto Show which lasts through Sunday at Will Rogers Coliseum. "We had to put it up at practically a moment's notice," said club President Bill Parham, pointing to the five-car display. "We didn't know until Thursday night whether there would be enough space for us to put up an exhibit. Then I had to call some of the members and get them to bring their cars down." Parham's newest car, a Lotus Mark II which he purchased in Kansas, is one of the racing machines on display. He will drive it in competition for the first time January 31 and February 1 at the Frostbite Sports Car Race. Other cars in the display are a red and white Cooper owned by Hugh Grammer, a 2.9 Ferrari owned by Captain Paul Hill of Carswell Air Force Base, Anseth Childs' Elva and the homemade Mangham-Davis Special. It is the Special that is drawing most of the spectators to the display. "They (Owners Stormy Mangham and Frank Davis) have spent about $2,500 on it now," Parham said in comparing the machine with the higher priced foreign jobs. "The funny thing, though, is that they're working on the engine. The engine block itself is under the hood, but all the parts have been taken out of it." What are they doing with the engine parts, asked one of the spectators. "That's the big secret," Parham explained. "They haul the parts out and when they bring them back, it just goes that much faster." Also on display are new foreign sports cars, including a bright red 300 SL Mercedes Benz that is attracting a large group of spectators daily.
