Lack Dates? Try Poise, Manners So your date calendar hasn't been filling up lately? Maybe some of the reasons for it are revealed by the eight high school leaders who have given their opinions on the subject "What Do You Look for in the Person You Date." For instance, 17-year-old Linda Roden of Tech says her ideal date "doesn't have to be a brainjust so he's not an idiot." And Kathryn Bullock, a Poly senior, agreed with Linda and commented, "There aren't a whole lot of intelligent boys anyway." At Amon Carter Riverside, however, one girl said she had rather have brains than muscle, any day, although she prefers both. That was Beverly Houston who added she admires a boy who is "good humored and not always trying to get the center of attention." There were boys on the panel, too. Some, like Thomas Hudson of Technical, said he preferred a mature girl. "You know, most girls are always goofing and laughing and acting silly," he said. "I don't like that." Intelligence is not such a big issue among the boys. "I like a girl with a reasonable amount of intelligence," said Byron Christian, 17-year-old Carter Riverside senior. "I don't like a girl to try to entertain you by just sitting there like a log." Most of the male panelists went along with Jimmy Morgan Jr. of North Side, who said, "First of all I notice the way a girl looksher general appearance and the way she dresses." The boys all put a high premium on a pleasing personality, and some, like David Ford of Poly, said it was the most important thing to him. "A girl doesn't have to be Marilyn Monroe to please me," he said, "but she does have to be able to carry on a conversation." Morgan said he also wanted a girl to "talk a lot because I'm not the talkative type," but he added that he "didn't like his girl to be the loudmouth of the bunch." The girl panel members all said they were attracted to boys who dressed neatly and were respected by teachers and students, alike. "I don't like a boy to act like a juvenile delinquent," Linda declared, "I think that's horrible." Beryl Ann Tolbert, senior at North Side, said she prefers a boy with the same religious convictions as herself, and she wants her family to approve of him. Beryl Ann also said poise is important. "I like a boy who isn't quite so formal, who can be at ease with your family or with your friends," she said, and added, "I like someone who will go places were both the boy and the girl will have a good time." Dating activities also brought a remark by Beverly. She said, "I usually go with someone who doesn't always have to follow the crowd and can decide on new places to go." Ford said a girl could win his heart from the start "if she bragged on his car." All the panelist except the North Side students were chosen from student councils. Two of the larger schools in the city, Paschal and Arlington Heights, will participate in next week's discussion, "Should High School Students Go Steady?"
