Description

Civil Courts Furniture Issue Raised - Mild criticism developed Monday over purchase of furniture for Tarrant County's new Civil Courts building. The criticism came from county commissioners as the $2,500,000 structure officially opened for business. Precinct 3 Commissioner Johnson questioned the method being used to purchase chairs and courtroom furniture for the five-story building. County Purchasing Agent Lange told him that the furniture was ordered without bids at the request of 17th District Judge Langdon. Precinct 4 Commissioner Minton reminded his colleagues that they had approved the arrangement. However, none of the other commissioners could recall doing that. Lange said the order had been given to Stafford-Lowdon Company and would amount to several thousand dollars. Johnson's suggestion that all future furniture purchases be made on a bid basis was approved. The district clerk's office was the first to be opened in the new structure. It is on the fifth floor. Office workers and movers were on duty over the weekend transferring files containing more than 150,000 court cases. The cases date back to 1879. Mrs. Earline Prescott, district clerk, said the move went off without any difficulty. Some of the furniture from the old building will be used in the new one.
