Description

West is Reported Next U. S. Attorney - Congressman Bruce Alger of Dallas told the Star-Telegram Washington Bureau Friday noon that he had learned W. B. West III of Fort Worth will be nominated as next U. S. attorney for the Northern District of Texas. Alger, the only Republican member of the House of Representatives from Texas, said his information came from Congressman Kenneth Keating of New York, ranking Republican member of the House Judiciary Committee. A successor to Heard L. Floore, whose resignation as federal prosecutor becomes effective Friday afternoon, must be nominated by President Eisenhower and confirmed by the U. S. Senate judiciary committee. The White House said at noon it had not received the recommendation on the position. If Congress adjourns in the next day or so, the new appointee may receive a presidential recess appointment. If the session continues another week, it may follow regular channels. West, a personable 36-year-old bachelor, has been an assistant U. S. attorney since 1953 and was made first assistant August 1, 1957. He was first attached to the lands division, and his work in the office has largely been on civil cases and land condemnation suits. However, he has done some criminal work all along and recently worked on the cases involving the River Oaks Bank defendants and James E. Papworth, who was convicted of complicity in the projected payroll robbery at Carswell Air Force Base.
