Description
Old Locomotive Bell Presented to Church - A 250-pound brass and silver locomotive bell that clanged warnings along the Sante Fe route from Chicago to the missions of California for more than 30 years came to rest Thursday at a little mission church here. L. M. Olson of Galveston, vice president and general manager of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway Company, made the presentation of the old locomotive bell to Rev. Charles L. Mulholland, pastor of St. Francis Catholic Church. "For many years," Olson said, "this old bell was rung as a warning - to save lives. Now we perpetuate the service of the bell for use in a church - to call people to services to save souls." In blessing the bell in the churchyard Father Mulholland said, "May this bell speak with the gentle tongue of St. Francis, calling the faithful to a reminder of the words of St. Francis to make us instruments of the Lord's peace." Bells from the old locomotives of the Santa Fe were salvaged when the line became one of the first major railroads to convert to completely dieselized power. Presentations have been limited to church and Boy and Girl Scout groups. This is the first to be placed in this area.
