Description
Councilman C. D. Rolison, says crowd has legitimate gripes. Following the shooting of Boyd Police Chief Lee Cockrell, a mob gathered outside of Boyd City Hall. Highway Patrolman Gordon Payne said that at its peak, a mob numbered about 200. That would be almost half of this North Central Texas town (a state highway sign on the outskirts reads, "Boyd, Population 550"). The people didn't gather there in the main highway through town yelling for revenge for the shooting of the chief. Instead, they shouted their approval that he'd been wounded. "I hope he's dead," cried a voice in the crowd. "We sure won't miss him," echoed another voice. The mob was comprised of the menfolk of Boyd and the surrounding area. Teenagers were in the majority. But quite a few fathers and grandfathers stood in the road shouting their disapproval of the community's police force. Scarcely a woman was seen. When reporters arrived shortly after sunset, it was almost a gala circus atmosphere that prevailed there.
