Description

Safecrackers had a tough time at one trailer company Thursday night, an easy time at another, and made off with a total of about $370 from the two jobs. They had to prove their stuff at Hyde Trailer Sales at 312 Northwest 28th, where they took about $250. But there was no challenge for them at the Little Dude Trailer Company, Inc., at 802 Northeast 29th, where their take was $120. At Hyde, the first problem was getting into the corugated metal building. The yeggs solved that one by cutting a hole in the side with a pair of shears. Then there was the safe. They wanted to make sure they got in, so they: took a torch and cut off the door, smashed a four-inch layer of concrete behind the door, and burned an 18 x 25-inch hole in the top of the safe. City Detective H. L. Stephenson said it was the worst smashed-up safe he had ever seen. The intruders poured water over the top of the safe to keep the money from burning while they used the torch. Manager A. G. Thompson said they also got payroll checks worth about $1000, but left several other checks behind. At the Little Dude building, the safe men had it soft. They took a cutting torch from the back of the shop and prepared to go to work. But a sign on the safe said "This Safe is Open." They accepted the invitation, departed with the money and left the torch behind. Stephenson said the same men seemed to have done both jobs.
