Miss Mary Merrett, a 1958 graduate of Birdville High School, received Tuesday night the first annual scholarship given by the American Airlines Administrative Association. The $250 scholarship was presented to Miss Merrett at a dinner meeting of the association at Amon Carter Field. She is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Merrett of 7113 Briley and plans to attend Texas Christian University (TCU), where she will major in speech. Miss Merrett was chose by two special committees from among 10 contestants, all of them sons or daughters of American Airlines employees. The award is made on the basis of outstanding integrity, leadership, initiative, stability and other desirable characteristics. The winner's father is superintendent of aircraft ramp service for American Airlines at Carter Field. He has been with American since 1929. At Birdville High the scholarship winner was a cheerleader, homecoming queen, class favorite for three years, Miss Birdville and student council treasurer. The award was presented by G. Allan Brown, scholarship committee chairman. James E. Carlyle, association president, introduced the speaker, Amon Carter Jr., and American Airlines director.
