The pilots who hold the world's official altitude and speed records for the United States are a couple of smiling, handsome buddies who pal around together fishing the Russian River in California while not flying high and fast. Top man- altitude wise- of the pair is Major Howard C. (Scrappy) Johnson, 38, of Knoxville Tennessee. Fast man of the pair is captain Walter W. Irwin, 34, of Everett, Washington.
