Description
Some 70 vice presidents and other executives of General Motors Corporation, led by GM President Harlow H. Curtice and GM Executive Vice president L. C. Goad, arrived in Fort Worth before the formal opening of the GM plant at Arlington. They, together with other GM men from the Fort Worth-Dallas area, were given a closer view of what kind of a section they have chosen for their Buick-Oldsmobile-Pontiac assembly plant when Amon Carter entertained them with a ranch style shindig at his Shady Oak Farm. Immediately after landing at Amon Carter Field in a GM plane, Curtice said his organization had selected Arlington for a plant because Texas is considered the heart of an area with the best growth possibilities in the nation. He predicted that as Texas grows the GM plant at Arlington will match the pace and that eventually the GM installation will become one of the major ones in the organization. Curtice pointed out that Arlington plant has 1,250,000 square feet of working space, situated on a 250-acre tract-all adding up to plenty of room for growth. However, there are no plans right now for definite expansion, he added. The GM plant at Arlington is already turning out 35 automobiles an hour and between 5,000 and 6,000 each month, Curtice explained. The normal working force will be approximately 2,500 employees.
