Lieutenant Sam J. Lockett, center, adjusts an oxygen flow regulator during an indoctrination "flight" to 45,0000 feet in the Carswell Air Force Base altitude chamber. B-36 crew members take the course to learn how to survive aloft, where 45,000 feet a man without oxygen will die within 12 to 20 seconds.
