Representatives of the Air Force, Army engineers and Abilene's citizenry were present at groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Abilene Army Air Base (Dyess Air Force Base). Shown turning a spadesful of dirt, left to right, are Major General J. B. Montgomery, commander of the 8th Air Force; W. P. Wright, chairman of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce national defense committee and Colonel Herbert D. Vogel of Dallas, Southwestern division engineer of the U. S. Corps of Engineers.
